About
A little background about me and running… I used to be a “runner”. I ran track for 7 years from High School to College. It was never something I enjoyed doing… but I did it because I wanted to be part of a team. And that much, I accomplished. So you can imagine I wasn’t the best runner on the team with that approach to running. I hated distances, even the 1 mile warm up we had to do before practice, not to mention the cross-country seasons where I pretty much walked every race. I competed in the sprint races, and my event was the 400m hurdles. I never placed in that, or any other individual sprint races… only the relay races. But being on the team kept me fit through those years and I also made life long friendships.
Once I graduated college, I just completely stopped running altogether. And it even got to the point where I could not run for 5 minutes to save my life. I still exercised more or less regularly and I danced… but nothing else has kept me as fit as running did. So last year after my daughter turned 1, and I decided that it was time to rid myself of the baby weight (plus any other extra weight I had gained throughout the years since I stopped running). I found the couch to 5k running plan, which was not intimidating at all and kept me motivated to pick up running again. And from August to October I stuck with it, but then life got busy and I had to stop. I decided to pick it up again in December and got to the point where I can run 3 miles non-stop… a great improvement on my previous cross-country experience.
I ran my first real 5K race in March 2008. It was a good starting point for me, then I ran another one in May and the time improved quite a bit. And with the help of Team In Training.. I trained for and ran my first Half-Marathon in July, it was awesome!! Maybe next year I’ll work towards my greater goal of running a full marathon… we shall see. Just for now though, I’ll continue running 5Ks, 10Ks and when the spirit moves me, half marathons :-).
